Chief of Police

David F. McCarthy


The Greenfield Police Department is an organziation of over 40 sworn and non-sworn personnel devoted to providing the citizens of the community of Greenfield Massachusetts a safe comfortable environment in which to live through a variety of Community Policing Programs that seek citizens input, direction and assistance.

Chief of Police David F. McCarthy has thirty years of experience in the department with over fifteen years in the position of Chief.

The department is divided into three primary divisions Patrol, Detective and Administration and all sworn personel up to the rank of Chief are appointed through civil service.

The department currently has the following sworn positions:

  • Chief of Police

  • Captain

  • Lieutenants (2)

  • Sergeants (4)

  • Patrol Officers (28)

  • A recruit police officer after sucessfully passing a standardized entrance examination, background screening and physical must complete an eighteen week academy, certified through the Massachusetts Criminal Justice Training Council. Officers completing academy training have a year long probation period before gaining permanent status.

    Officers are assigned to one of three patrol shifts:

  • 8-4

  • 4-12

  • 12-8

    Officers patrol in cruisers equipped with Mobile Data Terminals with PacketCluster Software from Cerulean Technologies enabling motor vehicle listings, person checks and secure cruiser to base and cruiser to cruiser communications and reporting through the use of laptop computers and radio modems. Booking of prisoners and crime scene photographs are digitally stored on computer with software from DDSI Systems Compu-Capture software. Lineups on suspects can be generated based on physical descriptions automatically. Digital still and video images taken in the field can be stored on the system reducing operational costs and enabling rapid electronic suspect information and enlargements of photos.

    Officers after gaining experience in patrol can move to several different positions outside of patrol including: Juvenile, Domestic, Detectives, Narcotics or School Resource Officer. Positions in the Detective Bureau are supervised by Captain Joseph P. LaChance a twenty-eight year veteran of the department. Investigators work days and evenings and can be reached through department voice mail when not on duty.

    Officers can also apply to become members of Bike Patrol, K9, Special Response Team or The Honor Guard.

    The Greenfield Police Department web site is to inform both law enforcement officers and citizens both locally and nationwide about our department and the people behind the badges. The site will change weekly and will continue to expand and grow as new technology becomes available.
